Not sure what the whole steel tuning is, but Nels and Jeff have both dropped the 1st string to D. 1,2, and 3 are D,B,G. It makes sense if you try the beginning of the first instrumental break around 2:00.

i'd say some sort of G9 thing. normally lap steels are in some sort of 9th tuning. but then again, i could be totally wrong.

Been learning the lapsteel for a few months now and... I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TUNING HE'S IN!? Any pros out there that might have a guess for me

You are so right... I studied at Berklee as a drummer, and I can tell you that Glenn Kotche has got it all too. I wonder if they just travel the country and think, " Ya know, we could just about beat the shit out of any band." They are a truly talented group of people.
